On May 20, 1951, salesman Matthias Hintermann from St. Georgen i. A. in the area of the Drachenwand. The shocked friend who rushed to help could no longer describe the exact location of the crash. Only after a two-day search was the casualty, who was probably not dead immediately; rescued dead by an alpine gendarme and a mountain rescuer from Gmunden.

This incident led to the founding of the Mondsee branch of the Austrian mountain rescue service. After a two-year probationary period, on May 28, 1953, the state leadership confirmed the local committee. The founding of the local office in Mondsee was completed on July 11, 1953, when the regional management handed over the service ID cards and badges. Until 1959 it was headed by Matthias Soriat. Herbert Thaller held the management position from 1959 to 1979, followed by Nikolaus Faber. From 2005, Heinz Hemetsberger was head of the local office in Mondsee, and through his commitment he was able to set up the operations center in St. Lorenz. Andreas Widlroither has been the local manager of the Mondseeland mountain rescue service since April 2017. In addition to the salvage operations, monthly meetings are held, and regular exercises, courses, seminars and lectures are also part of the mountain rescuers' program.
